Burleigh Heads Beach

Today we took a little detour from the regular beach (Surfers) and headed over to Burleigh Heads Beach.

It was absolutely beautiful, check out the quick video I captured with a Nikon D7000, I recorded it in 1080p but I didn’t feel like waiting 20 minutes for it to upload to youtube. The song is You Got The Love (The XX Remix) – Florence and the Machine.

Later.

Catching Up

Dear readers, sorry for the delay in posts, we’ve been really busy.

It’s saturday night here on the Gold Coast and roughly around 11:40PM.

Lets kick off. I’m kinda tips, 6 beers down and listening to some Childish Gambino; stoked.

Like Josh said, we’ve met a lot of people, both good and less tasteful. I’m glad to report that our room-mates are a thrill, whether it be cleaning, cooking, organizing, or hanging out on a recovery night we are all there for each other.

Special shout outs to Brittany, Becky, Tim and Josh.

So what exactly have we been doing. I guess “exploring” would be the best term for our endeavours over the past 3 weeks. I’m having a hard time trying to visualize my structure of this blog post (beer 7 now), so I think I’m going to break it down into “weekly headers”.

Week 1

The first week seems like so long ago, upon arrival Josh and I met Dan and Graham, as previously stated. Dan’s from Medicine Hat and Grahams from PEI; they are both in the BIT program also.

I guess mostly over the course of this week we were settling in, shopping for the apartment, mingling with the local crowd, and adjusting to the +16 hour time difference.

Not much to talk about here.

Edit: Shit, I forgot to mention that Tim arrived in this week.

Week 2

This week will be forever known as O-Week; the most epic partying experience I think I’ve ever had.

Imagine this: it’s a week before classes, almost all of the residents have arrived, the local liquor store has been located, and there are planned events that revolve around drinking and partying; I still dont think I gave O-Week its due diligence .

Here’s a link to its Schedule

Monday was definitely the highlight of O-Week, Brittany had arrived and moved in and the festivities began. Basically here on Res, there are 9 blocks, each block got block t-shirts to wear and rep their block as hard as they could. There was a red bull sponsored olympiad that consisted of rock climbing, plank walking, choreographed dancing, naked running, hockey, precision plush toy tossing etc; ridiculous.

During this week is when I got to meet some pretty decent people, there’s no point naming them, they know who they are. Plus my blog would look kinda gay if I had a list of 20+ name shout outs. Teddy & Sebby get one though; homophil

O-Week consisted of mass partying so forgive me if I don’t recall half of the memories or people that I met; Childish. (Beer Eight)

One thing I’ll remember about O-Week was the beach, there were countless trips, however there was this one day where Surfers could not look any better. I was fortunate to spend it with the people that currently count.

Week 3

Back to school.

Well, classes are kinda different. There are no more lectures of 30, they’ve been transformed into 250+ attendees. Textbooks are mandatory and cost me roughly $400AUD; Shit’s adding up real quick.

Here’s a copy of my Schedule

The first week consisted mostly of the introductory bs. Although there was a lot of Java review that took place, probably close to 25 hours worth.

That brings us to today. Josh and I made an epic stir fry, grabbed some beer after drinking wine for 3 weeks and updated this thing.

Don’t expect anything from me for another month.

Thanks for reading.

New Friends

So we’ve been neglecting our blogging for some time now but I think it’s time we run through an update and get this blog rolling. Over the past three weeks we’ve met a ton of new people, experienced new places and have gotten settled into our humble abode at the Griffith University Village. This post will be about the new people that I’ve met so far on my journey.

The very first new person we met on this trip was Daniel Wang who we drove in with from the Brisbane airport. The entire time we waited for him we simply kept making jokes about the fact that his last name was Wang. Sanjiv and I began to make rap sequences using ‘Wang’ while sitting in the van taxi at the residential airport. This included “Common wang, you’re the mang” etc etc. We met Dan when he entered the taxi and he was a really cool guy. He was taking the same route as us by going from an IT diploma to a bachelor of IT at griffith. Shortly after when we arrived at the village we met Graham who was also a very cool individual. We walked down to a store near the village and grabbed bedding, beers etc. for the first night here. Sanjiv and I went to bed early due to jet lag and woke up early the next day.

On the first full day that we were here Sanjiv, Dan, Graham and I walked down to the BBQ area in the Village. That is where we met the Norwegians Teddy and Sebastian, the english man James, the tall skinny Swede Victor, Kirsty the bubbly blond Canadian from Ontario (Waterdown – I laughed at this by the way pretty hard), miss cool Kim from Toronto and a number of other people just talking and hanging around the village. They convinced us to go out to Surfers Paradise for our first experience there. First we went and pre-drank at an apartment then went out. I managed to soak my shoes when I was peeing in the ocean on the beach once we got to surfers after the ‘maxi taxi’ ride and went to a pub. The rest of the night was great and so all of our friendships were established and our new Australian experience began.

Soon after our room mate Tim arrived from New York. The airline lost his luggage and wasted his time but he made it. My perception of Tim had been way off from our earlier facebook based discussions (not in a negative way Tim). He turns out to be a really laid back, caring, out-going, semi-health nut individual that clicked with Sanjiv and I immediately. We bonded over soccer among other things which made it really easy to like this American that had moved in with us. Tim came to Australia to finish his Business degree and simply needed one more class but came for the amazing experience. Tim began to voyage on our outings (which there was many) and the fun began with him as well.

Then followed the lovely Brittany from St. Catharine’s, Ontario who arrived soon after. She had come in with some family – her cousin from Brisbane and her little cousin – who was helping her bring things in to the apartment when we first met. We made a brief introduction and Brittany left us until the following Sunday. She left us a lovely note in the meen time and all of us were very excited to have a room mate that had already made such a great first impression. When she came back we began to get to know each other and she told us she was taking a semester here toward her Biology degree. We went for our first outing with Brittany in Surfer’s Paradise at a pub called “Waxy’s” and this is where I first got to know her really well. After we came back to our apartment I’m pretty sure we talked to each other for over an hour. Our first impression had been right in the way that she is a kind, caring, outgoing, driven, gorgeous and even nerdy (which made it easy for us to relate) individual who doesn’t want to do anything except save the world through her research and be the most self-less person she can be. She left us once again on a Byron Bay trip where she learned how to surf, went kayaking with dolphins, and let a Koala get to second base with her. We’ve been hanging out every day since and it’s been the best.

Then came Becky from Townsville, Australia who arrived last. I’m pretty sure I’ve never met someone as happy as Becky. It seems as though there’s nothing that can bring her down (that I’ve seen at least) even after spending $1000 in one day on avoidable penalties, which was one of the first days I met her she was still bubbly and happy as ever. Whether it’s Master Chef Australia, hanging out in the mornings after long nights of drinking, driving around in her pimped out Corolla or playing on her guitar I’ve been very lucky to have met her and to be her room mate.

All in all everyone I’ve met on this trip so far has been amazing, you’re all amazing. All of you! Even if I haven’t mentioned you in this post I’m blessed to have you all in my life.

Take care and look for another post soon. We’ll be staying on top of this from now on.

The Start of The Adventure

Hello Readers,

First off let me extend my apologies to everyone as this posting is way overdue.

With that out of the way, lets get started.

It kicked off on July 5th when Josh and I left YYC and started our 11 hour adventure to Tokyo, Japan.

Keeping it classy and flying business class.

We arrived at Narita International where we had some Sushi and Beer amongst all the other travellers:

When I was envisioning Tokyo’s airport, I thought that it was going to be some high-tech, “space age” international station, truth be told it was quite dingy and very old fashioned.

What did surprise me was Thailands Airport, their infrastructure was amazing and very well kept.

After Thailand we finally put an end to our 31 hour trip and touched down in Brisbane, our new home.

At this point I think we were starting to realize how surreal this experience was going to be, we were on our own, 9600 miles away from everything we knew.

Take Off

Josh and I are ready to embark on a 31 hour trip together.

See everyone soon, Thank you all for everything.

Packing

Man, it’s so weird packing up absolutely everything I own.

I’m trying to decide on what I need to take and what to leave behind.

It’s like I’ve come up with a weird sentimental memory or meaning towards a piece of clothing, or a picture and it’s impossible for me to part with it; oh well, must continue.

More to come later readers.

3 More Days

I had a great time yesterday.

My house was filled with family and friends, we lit up the BBQ and enjoyed the summers night.

I’m going to miss things like this when Josh and I embark on our adventure, I’ll treasure these memories forever.

For everyone that came out, Thank you. And for those who couldn’t make it, no worries, I’ll catch you next time.

Take care guys.

Sanjiv.
